Billy Joe Shaver (July 23 at Hugh's Room)

 

1. Thursday: Hot Latin dance music

Head to the Horseshoe Thursday night for Grupo Fantasma, one of the hottest Latin bands in Austin. Only $12.

 

2. African music all weekend

The 8th annual Bana Y'Africa festival runs 2 days this year, at Yonge-Dundas Square. Free. 1-11pm each day. Vendors, crafts & food. I have the full lineup and detailed schedule posted.

Stella Chiweshe: A show to make time for. The "queen of Zimbabwean mbira" (thumb piano) plays the Berkeley Church. $25.

 

3. Monday:  Billy Joe Shaver

This will be the last reminder of the performance by the great American songwriter. Hugh's Room, 8:30. My profile, comments and links about him are here: http://www.to-music.ca/bjs.htm. NOW weekly has an article this week about him.

 

4. Looking ahead - a few events

Aug. 1: Banjo meets Africa: Jayme Stone (and guests) at Hugh's Room

The Ontario banjo player has played with musicians as diverse as Béla Fleck & Toumani Diabaté). For this show, he's joined by Malian musicians Mansa Sissoko (kora)  and Jay Youssouf (kamale n'goni) and others.
 

Jul 26-29: Beaches International Jazz Festival in the Beach(es).

The huge streetfestival begins July 26, and includes Dr. Draw, Sultans of String, Jason Wilson & Tabarruk, Shakura S'Aida, Caché, Gary Kendall Band, Samba Squad, and many more. The main stage performances run Jul. 28-29, and include Jayme Stone, Son Aché, SoulJazz Orchestra and more. Click their link for all the details.
 

Aug. 3-6: Island Soul at Harbourfront

Details haven't been posted on Harbourfront's website yet, but performers include Ernest Ranglin, Barrington Levy, Black Stalin, plus several films (The Harder They Come, Calypso Dreams & others). I have some of these events posted.
 

Aug. 9-12: Jazz By Genre Summerfest at the Docks

"4 days; 10 flavours of jazz" including Randy Weston's African Rhythms Trio, Hendrik Meurkens & New York Samba jazz Quartet, Hilario Duran, Jason Wilson & Tabarruk, and more. All-day passes: $25-$45. Tickets at Ticketmaster. Click here for more details.
