1. SOUTHERN MUSIC FIND:

Fans of southern American roots music will want to make an effort to get a copy of the current Oxford American magazine. It's a quarterly I'd never heard of until I discovered it recently in the music rack of a magazine stand. This is their 6th annual "Music Issue".  It comes with a terrific CD that opens with Joe Liggins & His Honeydrippers, and finishes with Sun Ra & His Intergalactic Arkestra. There's an awful lot of territory between New Orleans and Saturn, in space -- and in music. There's soul, country, punk, gospel, kids music and more; songs by Eartha Kitt to Jeannie C. Riley; Sam Cooke to Muhammed Ali(!).

There are fine profiles of all 23 CD artists, and a number of extended essays on other topics. The writing lives up to the magazine's slogan, "The Southern Magazine of Good Writing", and includes writers such as Peter Guralnick and Roy Blount.

I have more information about the issue, including links to some of the stories, and a video of Louis Armstrong and Johnny Cash re-creating Satchmo's 1935 recording with Jimmy Rodgers.

A real gem, but it's selling out. Act soon.

2. CHUCK BERRY'S 80th BIRTHDAY

A belated (Oct. 18) Happy Birthday to the father of rock & roll. I've posted an appreciation of Chuck Berry, including some terrific video clips, the most mangled Berry lyrics ever ("Goin' to the pearl hop, Lookin' at the middle der" ????), Berry's own Newport Festival "riot", and hitchhiking a ride with Chuck.

3. UPCOMING EVENTS
Some really big names in music are coming to town soon, starting with a Congolese show tonight:

  • JB Mpiana & Wenge Musica BCBG. Nov. 3, Congolese music star. This might be only his second Toronto appearance (The first was Afrofest 2000). 9pm till 1am. Tickets $30. 647 686-7046.  (Note the times... this show may not be "normal Congolese time).
  • Bettye LaVette, Nov. 4. Lee's Palace. "The Greatest Unknown Soul Singer in the World" is now getting known. Fabulous voice, fabulous show. My review of her show last year at Lee's: http://www.to-music.ca/bettye.htm
  • Afrocuban All-Stars also on Nov. 4. Massey Hall
  • Prince Buster, Nov. 8. The king of ska in his first local concert at The Phoenix
  • Los Van Van, Dec 9 at The Guvernment

And more, including:

  • Donné Roberts & Senaya at the Tranzac, Nov. 4
  • Eliza Gilkyson, Nov. 8 at Hugh's Room. Austin singer-songwriter, whose new album reflects her concern about her country. Listen to a clip from her "tribute" to George W. ("Man of God")
  • BeBop Cowboys, recently named Toronto's best roots/country act by the editors of NOW: Nov. 12 at the Lula.
  • James Hunter, Nov. 15 at the Lula Lounge (two shows)
  • Lots more.

See http://www.to-music.ca/events.htm for more details on these and other shows

4. CIUT FUNDRAISING

My usual comment during fundraising efforts for CIUT & CKLN is "most radio is crap". Still true. Still crap. If you like your radio music and news minus the B.S. and celebrity froth, help keep it going. It won't survive otherwise.

Among the many benefits CIUT brings are: a huge number of live on-air broadcasts (the photo is from this summer's great "Jamaica to Toronto" concert), a new morning show, the longest running world music show in Toronto (Global Rhythms), African music on Karibuni, and whatever else you find that you won't find elsewhere.

CIUT's fundraising drive runs from Nov. 6 through 12. Tune in, phone in, kick in. We'll all be better for it. www.ciut.fm

5. RADIO CONCERT BROADCASTS:

  • "Horn of Africa" concert, Global Village, Nov. 4, 6:30pm, CBC Radio 2 (94.1). The concert was held this past January with a number of local musicians from Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.

  • The Refugee All-Stars of Sierra Leone: If you caught (or missed) either of their Toronto shows this year, "The World in Performance" rebroadcasts their show from the Winnipeg Folk Festival. . The show also features a performance by Hassan Hakmoun of Morocco. Nov. 10, CBC Radio 2 (94.1), 8pm

6. "EARTHSONG" OPENING

We're heading into that season when people are looking for gifts and goodies for others (or themselves). Here's a notice about the "Grand Opening" of a new store featuring music, art and crafts from around the world, this Saturday (Nov. 4) .

The opening features live music by Adam Solomon of the African Guitar Summit and Tikisa.

2-5pm, 2448 Kingston Rd (Cliffside Village, west of Midland). 416 266-ARTS. Earthsong is run by Ilse Lichtenberger who has been selling some of these goods at Harbourfront, Afrofest and other venues in Toronto.

A flyer is available here: http://www.to-music.ca/earthsong-flyer.jpg
