NO MORE BBC RADIO 3 WORLD MUSIC AWARDS

For the past seven years, these were the most important awards in the world music scene, but this year, the BBC has dropped out, and the gap -- at least for this year -- has been filled by two sets of awards:

fROOTS Album(s) of the Year
The former BBC Album of the Year award was in fact based on the winner of fRoots magazine's album of the year selection, an award that has been continuing since 1986... see below for all past winners.  Here are their winners and nominees for 2008:

Album of the Year winner: Jim Moray: Low Culture
Other nominees (in order of votes):

2. Toumani Diabate: The Mande Variations
3. Rokia Traore: Tchamantchi
4. Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project
5. Kasai Allstars: In the 7th Moon, The Chief Turned Into a Swimming Fish and Ate the Head of His Enemy By Magic
6. Bellowhead: Matachin
7. Issa Bagayogo: Mali Koura
8. Eliza Carthy : Dreams Of Breathing Underwater
9. Taksim Trio: Taksim Trio
10. Natacha Atlas & The Mazeeka Ensemble: Ana Hina

The last 8 fRoots winners were all albums from west Africa; this year only 3 of the 10 nominees are from there (and three are artists in the English folk tradition; "folk" after all, is the "f" in fRoots).

Reissue/ Compilation Album of the year:  Franco & Le TPOK Jazz: Francophonic
Other nominees:

2. Fotheringay: Fotheringay 2
3. Peter Bellamy: Fair England's Shore
4. Various: Desert Blues 3 - Entre Dunes & Savanes
5. Buena Vista Social Club: At Carnegie Hall
6. Gabi Lunca: Sounds From A Bygone Age Vol. 5

The fRoots link above has more about the awards and a lengthier list of runners-up. You can also see the full list of past winners since 1986 here.

GRAMMY AWARDS
Click the link above for the list of winners and nominees. Some relevant categories below (winners are bolded)

The Grammys, at least in the roots categories, tend to be pretty safe, picking the "tried and true" (and well known), and rarely in sync with other picks. (Compare their awards this year to other selections listed on this page). So I suppose it's a mixed blessing that the overall Record and Album of the Year selections were roots: Raising Sand and the single from it, "Please Read The Letter". But it took a former rock star, Robert Plant, partnering with Allison Krauss to do it.
