Quick reminders of a few notable events listed in last week's newsletter:

1. This weekend:

Irma Thomas tonight
The great New Orleans singer is celebrating 50 years of her musical career with a "50th anniversary" CD and tour. She performs for free tonight at Harbourfront (9:30), but is also doing a public Q&A session at 6:30pm. Details here.

Brazilian Day Monday
Brazilian Day is a 2-day event every year in New York (kicking off today), which spreads out over the 25 blocks of midtown Manhattan covering "Little Brazil". This Monday is the first such event held in Canada. We don't get too many chances to see some of Brazil's big stars, so this is a great opporunity. Carlinhos Brown and Elba Ramalho are huge in Brazil, but infrequently seen here. (You can visit Elba's website in Google-translated English here).  Local Brazilian musicians will also be performing.

Free, 2-7pm. Everyone attending the event is asked to bring an item of non-perishable food for the Daily Bread food bank.

Next weekend:

Lots happening for Ethiopian New Year's (check the event listings), but don't forget about the rare opportunity to see Ethiopian sax legend Getatchew Mekuria with Dutch group The Ex. Saturday and Sunday evenings. See event page for details and more info.

The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off. This year the fest includes free screenings of a number of significant music films, every day at noon at Yonge-Dundas Square. Films include The Harder They Come, 2 documentaries by D.A. Pennebaker: Don't Look Back (Dylan in England, 1965), and Monterey Pop, Scorsese's The Last Waltz, Jonathan Demme's Stop Making Sense (Talking Heads) and others. Free concerts by Joan Baez and Neil Young as well. See Yonge-Dundas Square program, and my event listings for some video clips.
