Apologies for the gap in newsletters... another non-musical project has consumed too much time over the last month or so. But for now, here is a very quick listing of some upcoming shows of interest. See www.to-music.ca/events.htm for more details on these and other events.

Also, see below for a note about CIUT's fundraising drive starting Nov. 3

Hallowe'en: Afrobeat, Congolese & funk treats tonight:

  • Like last year, Mr .Something Something puts on a Hallowe'en show at the Lula.

  • JP Mpiana & Wenge Musica BCBG: a show that fans of Congolese soukous will not miss. There'll be energy galore tonight. Here's a review (with photos) of a show (last year?) in Montreal. Also, a music video.  In the hall, Macedonian Bulgarian Orthodox Cathedral. 237 Sackville (Dundas/Parliament).  $30 at the door. Doors open 10. The official start time is 10:30, but those who know Congolese shows will likely show up later...

  • Buffy Sainte-Marie and Richie Havens at Massey Hall

Nov. 1:

  • "Changuito" Quintana with guests at the Lula Lounge

"One of the living legends of modern Cuban music, the man considered most responsible for the polyrhythmic foundation of Cuban salsa and timba." He'll be performing with many of Toronto's top Cuban musicians including Hilario Duran, Joaquin Hidalgo, David Virelles and Alberto Alberto with the Toronto Cuban All-Stars plus DJ Billy Bryans. See the Lula's page for details including more info about Changuito, plus video clips including a brief documentary on him.

  • "Joy in Every Land: with Sani-Abu and Ijo Vudu Dance Company celebrate the troupe's third anniversary. Dinner and traditional and contemporary African dance and drumming at the Pia Bouman Studio Theatre, 6 Noble St. (NW of Queen/Dufferin)

Also of note in November:

  • Nov. 10: Tom Russell and the Flatlanders (Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock) at Hugh's Room.  Check the event page for some more info.

  • Nov. 11: Jayme Stone & Mansa Sissoko return to town after their Africa to Appalachia tour to Hugh's Room where they had their CD release in June.

  • Nov. 13-15: Nujazz Festival at various locations. From NuFunk.ca

More shows & info listed here: http://to-music.ca/events.htm and more to come.

Nov. 3-9: Fundraising drive at CIUT

The semi-annual campaign to raise much-needed music for a much-needed community radio station.  Anyone listening to the kind of music listed here knows that stations like CIUT and CKLN (and the CBC) are almost the only game in town on the radio dial. That music wouldn't be there unless listeners support them. There's not much advertising money keeping them going... they need us. So tune in, check the website above, or call in during your favourite show that week and give them a few bucks. (A good world music day is Sunday, Nov. 9: Global Rhythms 3-6, and Karibuni, 6-8).

Did you know that most shows are now available by podcast for a week following? Check the program schedule on the website and click on the show. (You might have trouble if you're using Firefox).
