There is a terrific triple-bill
concert playing four cities this week (but not Toronto). I'd
suggest this show would be well worth the drive... I'm going to
catch it in St. Catharines. The show features 3 Canadian singers
who come from various backgrounds, but all bring their own
individual style and soul to their music.
Kiran Ahluwalia
sings ghazals --love songs from India and Pakistan which cross
the boundaries between Indian classical and popular music. Over
the last several years, she has garrnered extensive
international recognition. Click the link on her name for more
information.
You can here her (sing and talk
about her music) as the feature guest on Doré Stein's online
radio show, "Tangents" from last November. Go to:
http://www.mondomix.com/en/radios.php. Scroll down to
"Tangents" and click on the November 2007 show. The program is
about 90 minutes.
Tanya Tagaq: The
highly distinctive Inuit throat singer drew attention for her
performance at the now-famous Festival in the Desert in Mali
earlier this year.
Ndidi Onukwulu: The
Nigerian Canadian singer has made many appearances on this
website and newsletter for her former frequent performances with
Madagascar Slim and Donné Roberts. Her music though, is her own
style of soulful blues.
