Aug. 24: Pee Wee Ellis,
Jason Wilson &
Jay Douglas at
Hugh's Room
Ellis has been playing sax for over 40 years, and was a huge
part of James Brown's sound in the late 1960's, as well as that
of Van Morrison in the 70's. He's also worked with artists like
Esther Phillips, George Benson, African stars
like Oumou Sangare and Cheikh Lo, and Cuban Omar Sosa. Jason
Wilson & Jay Douglas are both well known in Toronto, especially
in the Jamaican music scene, including last year's successful
"Jamaica to Toronto" project. Tickets $25adv, $28
door. 8:30pm.
Sat. Aug. 25: The "Best of Ghana Music World Tour"
Some of the biggest names from Ghana are
touring Europe, Canada & the U.S. The show includes legendary High Life
singing star,
A.B.
Crentsil,, along with "HipLife"
star
Obour,
plus Lord Kenya, Kokovelli and more. 2007 Juno nominee
Kwesi Selassie,
originally from Ghana will also perform.

new Ghanaian music.

of India
Aug. 24: Zakir Hussain & Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma at
the Hummingbird Centre. Two stars of Indian music. Tickets
$25-100.
Aug. 25: Bollywood Fever with
Sukhwinder SIngh and Sunidhi Chauhan at the Canadian
Museum of Hindu Civilization, Yonge St., Richmond Hill. 8-11pm.
$20-35

Aug. 25-26: AfriVillage
Festival: Bloor St. West
Festival & "Taste of Africa". Cultural walk, live performances,
with two stages at each end of the festival -- Performers have
not yet (as of Aug. 23) been announced yet, vendors, food, Youth
Zone & Kids Zone, and more. Bloor St. W., between Ossington and
Crawford Sts. All day, for 2 days. Free.
Upcoming:
- Ethiopian New Year. In the Ethiopian
calendar, this will mark the start of a new millenium. Two big
celebrations in town:
- Sep. 1: Singing star Neway Debebe will
perform at the Opera House
- Sep. 8: Ethiopian Millenium
celebrations at Christie Pits (Christie & Bloor)
- Sep. 7-9: The
Port Credit Blues & Jazz Festival,
featuring Buddy Guy
