This newsletter primarily highlights some March events, as my website, including the event page will not be updated again until late in March, and there will likely won't be a newsletter until then. (My event page also has links to several other websites that contain similar listings).
 

1. EVENT HIGHLIGHTS FOR MARCH

First a few unique shows & events that stand out:

Mar. 2: "Jamaica to Toronto"
Various performers from the 2006 CD release which featured many of the gems from the "soul era" of the 50's and 70's. My photos of their great Harbourfront show last are here. Lee's Palace.

Mar. 3: "Music Freedom Day".

ighlighting the issue of music censorship and advocates the right to express oneself through music.  See the Mondomix website

Mar. 3: John Borra & Sam Ferrera at Safari Village
Punk/alt-country at the East African restaurant, featuring two legends from the Toronto punk scene. Free.

Mar. 10: Harry Manx & Friends
"The way I see it, Blues is like the earth and Indian music is like the heavents. What I do is find the balance between the two". Manx does bridge those two worlds, and is one of the few in the world to play the mohan veena, the cross between sitar and slide guitar invented by V.M. Bhatt. He is joined by Kevin Breit, Steve Marriner, Samidha Joglekar, Ravi Naimpally and George Koller.

Mar. 14: "A celebration of Global Village" at the Lula Lounge
The long-running CBC radio show hosted by Jowi Tayor ends its run this month.

The evening will feature Mr. Something Something with special guest Brownman, plus performances by Slim & Donné, Kiran Ahluwalia and Amanda Martinez. See this page for details.  Free. The show will be broadcast on the CBC March 24.

Mar. 5: Angelique Kidjo opening for Josh Groban. The odd-couple pairing of the year.

Mar. 8: Souljazz Orchestra, Kobotown & more at the Trane Studio

Mar. 9-10: Mr Something Something doing a live recording at the Trane Studio. Should be jumping.

Mar. 9: Hossein Alizadeh & Hamavayan Ensemble at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. A Small World presentation

Mar. 9-11: African Dance Weekend. Congolese Soukous from Pekoce et les Pekocettes, with Nouvel Exposé and Helena at the Cottage Mar. 9, plus Soukous dance workshops Mar. 10-11

Mar. 15: More dance lessons: at Earthsong World Music Art & Crafts. 7-9pm, with Saba of Nouvel Exposé. Ethiopian and Soukous dance.

Mar. 17: Kwanza at Earthsong. African drumming and storytelling

Mar. 17: Bill Bourne & Madagascar Slim at the Enwave Theatre

Mar. 23: Earl "Chinna" Smith and more at Hugh's Room

Mar. 25: Toots & the Maytals at the Phoenix

Mar. 29: Adam Solomon & Tikisa at the Lula

2. MALI HONOURS ALI FARKA TOURÉ

Today marks the beginning of official events to be held in Bamako, Mali honouring the late musician. See my main page for details.

 

3. AFRICAN MUSIC DOWNLOADS
