3. NOTES:

Just don't try whistling while you listen:

Need music everywhere, all the time? The Tooth Tunes toothbrush must be for you. Two minutes of music, transmitted through your teeth and jawbone while you brush. You think I could make this up? http://tinyurl.com/e8kn6

Early African recordings:

Rootsworld features an article about Hugh Tracey, an Englishman who dedicated himself to recording African musicians between 1929 and 1977. Many of these recordings are being re-issued Colonial Dance Bands - Kenya, Tanganyika, Portuguese East Africa, Northern Rhodesia, Belgian Congo, 1950 and 1952 and Bulawayo Jazz - Southern Rhodesia, 1950, 51, 52. The article, with audic clips  is available at: http://www.rootsworld.com/reviews/tracey06.shtml

Tough times for world music in New York & The U.S.

a) Tower Records, one of the largest music retailers, and a company that had an entire store in Greenwich Village dedicated to world music has filed for bankruptcy protection. See for example, "Tower Records Bankruptcy Heralds Industry Changes" on PBS's website: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/business/july-dec06/music_08-23.html

b) Robert Christgau who wrote on pop, jazz, and more lately world music for the Village Voice since 1969 was recently dismissed with several other staff members (Ownership has changed). Quoted by DubMC, a word music website, Christgau said "I don't have any idea what will become of 'world music' coverage at the Voice, except in the sense that an autonomous voice with a taste for such things will be absent, which can't be a plus."
