1. AIDS2006: Music concerts
First, the 16th International AIDS Conference officially opens today in Toronto. The website http://www.aids2006.org/ contains a wealth of information about relevant issues, and the converence.

There are several arts events sponsored by the conference. Details and background are available at: http://www.aids2006.org/admin/images/upload/1015.pdf (PDF format). Musical highlights include:

a)  Thomas Mapfumo, Donne Roberts & Soul Influence
Mon. Aug. 14, Harbourfront Centre (Concert Stage) 7:30pm. Free.

Mapfumo ("The Lion of Zimbabwe) & Donne Roberts probably need little introduction here. Soul Influence -- perhaps less well known -- is a Toronto-based acapella group, originally from several African countries, gospel-oriented, and active in supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

2. DORE STEIN: MUSIC FOR THE MIDDLE EAST

Dore Stein is the host of "Tangents" http://www.tangents.com/ on KALW San Francisco. He also produces periodic online radio shows focusing on social issues.  This is the description of his latest show:

"Lebanese, Palestinian, Israeli, Syrian and Iranian artists demonstrate through music what politicians and governments are seemingly unwilling to do - simply co-exist. As the civilian death count climbs in Lebanon and Gaza, children pay the greatest price. In part one of a two part series, our program opens with lullabies from the Middle East. Also featured is an epic tribute to Beirut by Lebanese oudist Rabih-Abou Khalil, the qanun artistry of Abdullah Chhadeh and a rare Arabic recording by Hollywood star from the 1950's Danny Thomas (Amos Yakhoob)."

The show is available at http://www.mondomix.com/en/radios.php. Scroll down to "Dore Stein" and select "August 2006" (While on that page, note that Charlie Gillett's last "Sound of the World" show, broadcast live from last month's WOMAD concert, featuring K'Naan is now archived).

The lullabies mentioned above are taken from the CD Lullabies from the Axis of Evil)

3. NEW ORLEANS MUSICAL UPDATE

A recent article from thhe New Orleans Times-Picayune will be of interest to those who care about New Orleans and Lousiana music. http://tinyurl.com/jz7nw, Fewer than 10% of local musicians have returned to the city (Aaron and Cyril Neville are among those who have moved away); venues like Tipitina's and Preservation Hall are surviving, but with much reduced activity.
