Hope you've all had a great musical July. The Toronto music scene has been terrific; fortunately or unfortunately, it's been too busy to catch up with these newsletters or concert photos. But here is quick note on some past and future items of interest.

1. Solomon Burke - July 8

In the midst of a great Afrofest, I left Queen's Park on Saturday evening, to catch the greatest soul singer in the world. It may have been the first show I've been to in the last couple of years I didn't photograph, but I did come away with a great story.

2. Photos

More to come soon, but recent shows posted include Salif Keita, Jamaica to Toronto, Femi Abosede and Amadou & Mariam

4. Links

I have begun expanding my links page (www.to-music.ca/links.htm) with a number of links to music resources and Internet radio sites. There will be a lot more coming over the next while, as I will try to exploit a little of the wealth of information, sounds and visuals available. Please send any thoughts or links. (And thanks to Don from Music Africa who has collected a wealth of African music links; I used a few on my page. If you're a member, check the February and May African Drum issues for lots more!

5. Ali Farka Toure - his final CD

Savane
His collaboration with kora player Toumane Diabate won a Grammy earlier this year. This CD has just been released this week in North America. European reviews have been superb. Nigel Williamson in Songlines magazine wrote "Savane genuinely does sound like the best album I've ever heard". Charlie Gillett in a review called it Toure's "masterwork" http://www.charliegillett.com/rotm.php?date=july06

Afropop Worldwide has an interview with AFT's procucer, Nick Gold here http://tinyurl.com/ogt44, and a review of the album:

6. Charlie Gillett

The British DJ and world music figure has made numerous appearances in this newsletter and on my website, including my appreciation page on learning that his health problems have resulted in his leaving his wonderful radio show, "The Sound of the World".

However, he will likely be back for one final show this week, broadcasting live from the WOMAD festival in England. Ironically, his show may end with the same perfomer who was his guest on his final studio show: the Somali-Toronto artist, K'Naan.

Go to www.soundoftheworld.com and look for the "Listen Again" link for Radio London. The WOMAD show should be available beginning Saturday 8pm (UK time), for a week.

An update on his health http://tinyurl.com/nsuyr. Also, in preparation for this week's WOMAD, he published a "Beginners guide to world music" in The Independent newspaper. http://tinyurl.com/nxght

7. Last note:

For anyone who checked the first installment of my Libyan photo-journal, the 2nd (and final) week is now posted at www.jookjoint.ca/libya
