Most of us look forward every
year to the summer for great live music; this year is shaping up
to be terrific. This is just a reminder of some of the amazing
shows coming up in just the next couple of weeks.
Visit
www.to-music.ca/events.htm for more information, and links
for these and many other shows. Check the number of listings I
have for July alone!

Sunday night features what should be one of the highlight shows
of the summer: Amadou & Mariam from Mali, with the
Refugee All Stars of Sierra Leone opening. See my events
page for more.
Also, Ska Cubano should
not be missed for anyone who loves Ska, big-band Cuban music, or
just great high-energy dance music.
Others over the weekend include
Nididi Onukwulu, Ceu from Brazil and lots more...
Elsewhere, celebrate Canada
Day Ethiopian style with A late night show featuring Kemer
Yousef & Nouvel Expose at the Lucky Moon Club on St. Clair.
July 6: Salif Keita.
Don't need to say anything more about the greatest voice from
Africa -- except to point out a recent interview with him on the
Afropop Worldwide website.
http://www.afropop.org/multi/interview/ID/93. Get your
tickets if you haven't yet.

2. LIVE MUSIC ON CIUT
CIUT-FM 89.5 (www.ciut.fm)
continues to expand its live music coverage in Toronto. A couple
of examples:
a) "It's Alive", the
weekly show that rebroadcasts live concert and club events (Tue,
9pm & Mon. 1pm) is considering expanding its scope, with
live-to-air broadcasts.
To test the interest in this,
host Andy Frank is broadcasting live, a special two hour show at
the Tranzac club with a wide range of acoustic acts including
Lingalad from Italy, The Audresy from Australia, Janine Stoll,
Kevin Zarnett and Kirsten Jones from Toronto.
Tue. Jul 4, 8pm. Tranzac Club,
292 Brunswick Ave. at Bloor. See
www.itsalive.info for
more details.
b) Live Broadcasts
Other live broadcasts on CIUT include both days of Afrofest
as usual, as well as many shows from Harbourfront July 2, and
much of the weekend of Jul 14-16 including legendary Afro-Flipino
Joe Bataan, Seckou Keita, "Jamaica to Toronto" and Kekele. They
will also broadcast part of the annual Jamaica Day on Saturday,
Jul. 29, 2-11pm.
3. MUSIC, POLITICS, PEACE & WAR
An old, but still
relevant reminder of the force of music is a new film to be
released this September, The U.S. vs John Lennon.
Described on the website as a "compelling and provocative look
at Lennon's transformation from beloved musical artist to
anti-war activist to iconic inspiration for peace that also
reveals the true story of why and how the U.S. government tried
to silence him... the issues and struggles of that era remain
relevant today".
Information, and a
trailer are available at

4. CD SALE
Always good news,
especially when the sale is being held by one of the foremost
roots music websites, RootsWorld. Cliff Furnald has run this
site for many years -- an invaluable resource. He recently
announced "the first public sale in 5 years of cdRoots, and
probably the last for quite a while. The sale will end when
everything is gone or when I just decide it ends."

5. PUNK?
Punk music doesn't
make many appearances in this newsletter or website, but if you
were punking in 1978, this may be of interest:
The Day the Music
Died: Dec. 1, 1978 "The bands were all there. The music was
loud, the Horseshoe was packed, and the atmosphere coarse and
smokey. It was The Last Pogo., punk's answer to The Band's Last
Waltz." -Peter Goddard, Toronto Star
Were you there?
Onlookers, participants, press, police... Were you at Toronto's
most riotous party, Toronto punk's last stand? If so, Colin
Brunton (director of The Last Pogo, producer of Puppets
That Kill, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Roadkill, Highway 61,
Cube...) wants to interview you for his new doc feature... The
Last Pogo Jumps Again, Cha Cha Cha Cha! Contact Colin
