In town this month: Grupo Vocal Desandann

The acapella group from Camaguey, Cuba are in Canada this spring and summer. If you have never seen them perform, you should make a point of checking them out. If you are familiar with them, you don't need my recommendation, just the info on where to see them.

They're Cuban, but as they discovered while singing together in a choir, they all share Haitian ancestry. Some time after that recognition, they formed their own group whose name -- as does the title of their first CD, Descendents -- pays homage to that ancestry. And their music does so, beautifully.

They are not yet as well known as they should be, but hopefully the upcoming release of their second CD, Light the Flame, and follow-up performances will help. As well, their biggest Canadian booster, Jane Bunnett just won the Best Contemporary Jazz Album Juno for her Embracing Voices CD, prominently featuring Desandann.

Stay tuned here and on the events page for some of their shows which include:
 - June 6, 5pm
Art of Jazz festival. Free (Distillery District)
 - June 12, CD release at Ellington's Music & Cafe, 805 St. Clair W., 9pm
 - June 30, noon: (with Jane Bunnett). Nathan Phillips Square. Part of Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival. Free.

Here are a few glimpses of their music. Below is a brief clip from their November, 2007 concert at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. (Photo above is from that show; more are here)

  • More video: Excerpt from a documentary being made by Jane Bunnett, filmed during Desandann's recording session in Banff
  • Samples (on CD Baby) from their first CD, Descendents

IRIS DEMENT: Coming to town: tickets going fast

October 3rd may seem a long way off, but obviously not to the fans of this wonderful and unique American singer. Within days of the official announcement of her Hugh's Room date, the show was about half sold out.

More about her coming soon.

Meanwhile, enjoy her performing her song, "Our Town" with Emmylou Harris

STEVE EARLE: Townes Van Zandt tribute, July 11

On July 11, Steve Earle will be doing a solo acoustic show at Massey Hall, following the recent release of his very personal tribute CD, Townes, a double CD of songs written by the late Townes Van Zandt, one of America's great songwriters. However, the connection between the two is much deeper and personal as Earle explained in this Rolling Stone interview published in January. (Earle even named his son after Townes).

The Townes CD is a unique double CD: one contains Earle's solo acoustic versions of songs. As he says in the interview, that was how he learned to play from Van Zandt. The other adds musicians to the same songs.

The video clip below is a beautiful tribute song, "Goodbye", written by Earle and performed with Emmylou Harris.

Some other video clips about Van Zandt:

  • Medley: His two biggest "hits": "If I Needed You" and "Poncho and Lefty", performed by Emmylou, Steve Earle and Willie Nelson, intercut with Van Zandt's own performances.
  • Be Here to Love Me: The trailer to the film profile of Van Zandt.
